There are six weeks left in my RC batch (Spring 2). That’s really not a lot of time. It took me about two weeks of struggling to ramp up, but the last 4 weeks have felt productive, which I attribute mainly to focus. I honed in on two projects, and am trying to treat each week as a sprint on either one of those.
The downside of that focus is that I feel like I’ve missed out on some of the experience of RC. So to that end, here are some goals for the second half of my batch:
Pair more - this seems like one of the best ways to bond with other Recursers and be exposed to new things. I follow the pairing channel on Zulip but the volume of requests has been lower than I expected. Maybe the fix is to post myself asking if anyone has something they want to pair on.
Socialize more - during the first 6 weeks, I didn’t spent much time with other Recursers outside of my daytime hours at RC. I missed most of the organized social nights. I’m going to change that this half – I really want to interact with more RC folks beyond the scope of mid-day banter. It’s too late for the Spring 1s, but Spring 2s and Summer 1s, let’s do it.
Do a group project - I would trade one of my two projects to work on something bigger with other Recursers. It may be that I’ve been blinded by my introverted approach to the last 4 weeks, but if there have been opportunities to join group projects, I’ve missed them (excluding perhaps the NAND2Tetris and OS groups, which seem like great learning experiences but aren’t the type of projects I had in mind).
Give more talks - I’d like to give more talks, because I enjoy them. The code I’ve been writing has been mostly assignments for online courses though, so it hasn’t really felt worth presenting. This is sort of a stretch goal.
